Trolling/cyber bullying

When an individual/ company is persistently targeted in a negative way online, usually through social media channels

The number of social media platforms available has lead to a proliferation in this, as has the fact that users enjoy a degree of anonymity when posting via social media sites.

Case study ariana grande

After she split with rapper boyfriend mac miller, and the latter died through a drug overdose, grande was trolled online. As a result, she disabled her Instagram comments for a time

Cyber bullying

When an individual is targeted online through hurtful or threatening messages, generally online.

Seventeen-year-old Felix Alexander had repeatedly been told he was worthless, ugly, and hated by anonymous bullies online - he tragically died after being hit by a train.

Body image, connotations and interpretations

Filters and photoshop:

- Unrealistic body expectations

- Body dysmorphia

- Metal health issues

Negative body image

Obsessing the Instagram posts of others can lead to feelings of negative self worth - both from lives influencers purport to lead and from images themselves, many of which have had filters added, or have been excessively photoshopped.

Some lenses on camera, due to their size, distort the shape and size of the nose, again leading to feelings of negativity regarding appearance.

Moral panic - Public anxiety and/or alarm in response to something that's happened within society it threatens the equilibrium within society

Moral panic exacerbates the negative impacts of social media as people think that they must look and act a certain way creating this public anxiety in a whole generation of who have an anxiety in trying to look a certain way and match the influencers on social media who rule their life.

they are aimed at the older audience and not child friendly - use of the male gaze - there is a lot of makeup used -

Backlashes against bands

Social media has enabled consumers to voice their own opinions on a range of issues

These include big business, whose marketing and/or products that object to

An example of this is Kim Kardashian recent 'kimono' line of clothing

There was a backlash from Japanese culture

Japanese users were annoyed

One way in which brands receive negative comments is through memes

A meme is an idea, behaviour or style that spreads via social networks for person to person and that usually involves a sarcastic or critical statment. This is known as parodying

With enough shares and likes, campaigns might go viral, attracting hundreds of thousands of responses

Decreased productivity

While many businesses use social networking sites to find and communicate with clients, the sites can also prove a great distraction to employees who may show more interest in what their friends are posting online than in their work tasks. There is also the grave risk of individuals commenting about their work place online

A false sense of connection

While Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be applied to show why people use social media, such sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much on time and psychic energy  on what might be called less meaningful relationships. Users may become less able to forge successful relationships in real life, at work or socially.

Imperialism

One criticism of globalisation is that it leads to imperialism - that is, the way in which predominantly western popular cultures is promoted to less developed countries. This may, in turn, lead to the gradual erosion of those less developed countries disney is an example.
